Purebred animals have always been highly valued. History knows such examples when the best examples of purebred representatives of breeds were not sold even for fabulous money. However, from time to time, the breed is on the verge of extinction and “fresh blood” is required to save it. Today we will tell you about dog crossing.

WHAT IS THIS PHENOMENON

In simple terms, crossing is the mating of two representatives of different breeds. This approach to breeding is used when there is a need to improve the breed characteristics or breeders want to get a new one. The result of selection work is offspring with greater strength, endurance, and also better reproductive ability. The following characteristics are improved: vitality, endurance, working qualities, adaptation.

Increased endurance and vitality of some representatives and poor similar indicators of others can be explained by their biological nature. As a rule, long-term purebred breeding over time leads to a deterioration in breed characteristics. The best representatives of the offspring obtained as a result of this method are selected for breeding purebred individuals of a new breed. As a result of crossing, the puppy receives mixed gene pairs: one from the father and one from the mother in each pair.

Today, there are several ways of crossing dogs of different breeds, but the successful result depends on a number of factors: the correct care and maintenance, which contribute to the development of certain desired qualities, the correct choice of the dominant (with more perfect qualities) base and the selection of optimal parents.

MAIN TYPES

The choice of the type of crossing is influenced by the goals and objectives that the breeder sets for himself. The quality and the correct choice of sources are also important. The following types of crossing are distinguished: absorption, introductory, reproductive (factory), industrial and variable.

Introductory

It is used when the breed meets all the requirements and has all the necessary qualities, but there is a need to improve them. To obtain the desired result, dogs are crossed in several stages:

  1. The broodstock of the improved variety is crossed with a representative of the breed chosen to improve the source. Compatibility and compatibility of parents is important.
  2. A second generation cross is mated with a purebred representative of the improved breed. In this case, only representatives with pronounced desirable characteristics are selected.
  3. Breeding hybrids among themselves.

Factory

This species is also called reproductive. In the process of this method, representatives of several breeds are used for breeding. A new breed is created by crossing hybrids that meet all the set breeding goals. As a result of this breeding method, the required qualities and characteristics develop.

Local aboriginal representatives who are well adapted to the surrounding conditions are chosen as the mother base. Other breeds are selected based on the qualities that need to be obtained, but which are not in the improved source. Large breed differences are more likely to develop completely new traits, but they are not easy to consolidate. In more similar mixtures, these qualities are fixed more easily and faster.

As a rule, factory crossing consists of several components:

  1. A model of offspring is being developed, which breeders want to get as a result.
  2. The initial representatives are selected.
  3. Crossbreeding between hybrids. Genetic enrichment. Another breed of blood is possible.
  4. Rigid culling of offspring.

Industrial

The main purpose of this type of reproduction is to obtain offspring suitable for a specific purpose. For this, only the first generation of offspring is used. This choice is argued by heterosis, which consists in the fact that the first generation of hybrids has improved, more developed parental qualities.

For this method, only purebred representatives are selected. Requirements for crossed individuals: a high degree of productivity and compatibility. The uterus must be adapted to local conditions. Higher quality requirements are imposed on manufacturers.

Variable

A kind of industrial crossing, in which purebred queens of the source and hereditary mixtures are mated with producers of different breeds, the number of which is not limited. In this case, the effect of heterosis is maintained continuously, which allows the use of hybrids more productively.

WHO IS CALLED MESTIZO

Very often you can hear the expression “breed of dog mestizo”. This is not entirely true, since a mestizo is a mixed breed or half-breed that appeared as a result of crossing representatives of different breeds. Crossed individuals can balance and complement each other’s qualities, but the result can sometimes be unpredictable

One thing is true: mestizos usually have excellent physical health, a high degree of productivity and a stable psyche. They are easy to learn, but inherited traits can come as a surprise to the owner. But the fact that these are non-purebred individuals does not mean that they do not need proper care and maintenance.

Of course, it all depends on the source rocks. Sometimes mestizo are born from mixed pairs of parents (purebred and outbred). The great advantage of these dogs is that they do not inherit genetic diseases from their parents.

PROS AND CONS OF THE METHOD

Crossbreeding has a lot of advantages – from improving breed qualities, improving health and mental state to breeding a new breed. However, there are significant drawbacks: the result is not always satisfactory, which leads to culling, and the fact that today only purebred dogs are more valued and bred.
